From food to compost

The video was prepared by the city of Milan for the EXPO exhibition (which has the leading theme “feed the planet”) which is hosted in Milan.

A few supplementary notes besides what you find embedded in the video:

Milan totals a population of 1.400.000, 100% covered by the scheme, which was implemented in 4 steps (each covering 350.000 inhabitants) starting in Nov 2012 until Jun 2014. The total collected tonnage in Milan is 130.000 tpy, which equals around 95-100 kgs food scraps per person (plain food scraps) – by far the largest contributor to separate collection of municipal waste. Garden waste is collected through another route. All food scraps are targeted, including meat and fish, separate cllection is done by biodegradableor paper bags which are used by the households in vented kitchen caddies.
