About the speaker

Claudio Ciavatta is a Full Professor of Soil Chemistry at Alma Mater Studiorum University of Bologna, Department of Agricultural Sciences, School of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine and a teacher of Soil fertility and Plant nutrition, Management of soil fertility, Agricultural biochemistry, Use and recycling of biomasses of Agro-industrial origin. Since 2014 he is a president of the Italian Society of Agricultural Chemistry, between 2010-2012 he coordinated the PhD Program in “Agricultural, Environmental and Food Science and Technologies”. Between 2007-2012 Claudio was a head of the Ph.D. School in “Agricultural Science”.

His scientific activities are focused on soil chemistry and biochemistry:
i) characterization of soil organic matter (humic substances), humic and humic-like substances of organic fertilizers, organic amendments, compost and other organic wastes paying particular attention to both agronomical and environmental implications;
ii) agronomical valorization of organic wastes of agro-industrial origin related to the key role in plant nutrition and closure of nutrient cycles in soil;
iii) dynamic of organic matter and nutrients in soil: mineralization of organic carbon and nitrogen (kinetics);
iv) soil quality and functions: microbial biomass, enzymes activities mainly involved in the dynamic of nutrients.

Claudio Ciavatta is author of more than 250 publications most of which published in international and peer-reviewed journals. He is referee of many scientific international Journals and member of scientific Societies: IHSS, SICA, IUSS, SISS. Since 1994 he is adviser of the Italian Fertilizer Commission and (2000–) of the Sub-Commission for Official analytical methods of fertilizers of the Italian Ministry of Agricultural, Food and Forestries Policies.
